On Friday May 3, 2024, the town of Yabassi, located in the Littoral region of Cameroon, experienced particular excitement. Indeed, the General Director of the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (CAMWATER), Dr. Blaise MOUSSA, accompanied by the Governor of the region, Mr. Samuel Dieudonné IVAHA DIBOUA, proceeded to the official launch of the works of the Drinking Water Supply Project of 9 cities – phase 2.
This ceremony, which took place in the Hall of Acts of the Municipality of Yabassi, marks a decisive turning point for the supply of drinking water to this locality. The General Director of CAMWATER underlined the importance of this project, emphasizing the need to deliver the site as quickly as possible. “The Chinese company CGCOC, in charge of carrying out the work, must take possession of its base as quickly as possible so that within 12 months at the latest, the first cubic meters of drinking water are injected into the existing network,” he said.
An ambitious project to improve the supply of drinking water
The main objective of this project is to significantly improve the supply of drinking water, both in quality and quantity, in accordance with the directives of the President of the Republic, HE Paul BIYA. The planned works include:
- Rehabilitation and extension of production facilities to reach a capacity of 600 m3/d
- Renewal of electromechanical equipment and installations
- Densification of the distribution network
Ultimately, around 8,000 additional inhabitants (or 800 households) will benefit from this new drinking water supply system (SAEP), a figure which could reach 13,500 inhabitants by 2030.
Unfailing support from local authorities
The Governor of the Littoral region, Mr. Samuel Dieudonné IVAHA DIBOU, expressed his full support to CAMWATER for the successful execution of this project. He called on all stakeholders – local administrative authorities, local elected officials, heads of sectoral administrative services, traditional chiefs and the driving forces of the NKAM department – to support CAMWATER and the winning company in carrying out this important desired and prescribed project. by the Head of State.
On the sidelines of the launch of the works, the Director General of CAMWATER and the Governor also recommissioned the existing drinking water supply system, which had remained non-functional for more than a decade. Thanks to recent rehabilitation and extension work carried out by CAMWATER, drinking water is once again flowing into the taps of 40% of households in Yabassi, particularly in the administrative district and the Lycée Bilingue area.
The Mayor of the Commune of Yabassi, Jean Mirabeau EBA, speaking on behalf of his populations, expressed his immense joy and thanked the Head of State and the Government for the resumption of drinking water service by CAMWATER . To facilitate access to drinking water for as many people as possible, Dr Blaise MOUSSA announced the provision of nearly 500 new meters, as part of a special social connection operation.
This ambitious project initiated by CAMWATER, under the leadership of President Paul BIYA, demonstrates the desire of the Cameroonian Government to improve the living conditions of the populations, by making drinking water accessible to all. The residents of Yabassi can now look to the future with optimism, knowing that very soon they will have sufficient quality water.
