It’s a diplomatic blunder that doesn’t go over well with Yaoundé. Tuesday during a television news, the TV5 Monde channel displayed on the screen a flag corresponding to the short-lived secessionist English-speaking republic rather than the real Cameroonian flag.
Faced with this affront deemed intolerable, undermining the honor and sovereignty of Cameroon, the government reacted with indignation. The Ministry of Communication published a press release demanding immediate compensation from TV5 Monde.
Incompetence or deliberate provocation?
How could such a renowned international channel commit such a “serious misunderstanding” ? Some do not hesitate to see it as a deliberate gesture on the part of the French-speaking audiovisual sector, in total disregard of the official flag of Cameroon known to all.
Is this culpable clumsiness or a desire to add fuel to the fire in a region in the grip of a secessionist conflict? In any case, the Cameroonian government expects apologies and strong measures from TV5 managers.
