As the launch of the 2024 African Cup of Nations approaches in Ivory Coast (January 13 – February 11), Cameroon, first in its qualifying group ahead of Namibia and Burundi, has revealed its list for players selected Thursday. Present among the twenty-seven Cameroonian players selected to compete in the competition, François Mughe (19 years old) finally decided to decline the summons of his coach Rigobert Song, according to information from L’Équipe. A decision motivated by the desire to play with Olympique de Marseille, which should be decimated offensively with the departures to CAN of Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr (Senegal).

After making his debut against Annecy last March in the Coupe de France, the 19-year-old winger only played seven small matches for 201 minutes on the pitch this season. The Douala native hopes to benefit from more playing time with OM, who will lose 8 players during the CAN.

A heavy schedule awaits the Phocéens with receptions in Strasbourg (12/01), Monaco (27/01) and Metz (11/02) as well as trips to Thionville in the Coupe de France (07/01) and to Lyon (04/02). The residents of the Stade Vélodrome will also travel to Hamburg to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 32 of the Europa League (02/15), a few days after the final of the African Cup of Nations.

For their part, the Indomitable Lions are currently in preparation training in Saudi Arabia where they will face Zambia on January 9. The five-time winners of the CAN will then play their group stage against Senegal, Guinea and Gambia.

Mughe suspendu ?

As stipulated in FIFA regulations, the Cameroonian federation is entitled to request that the number 24 of OM, which recently extended until 2028, be suspended during its team’s journey to the CAN. A point of regulation rarely applied, especially since the player has no selection to his credit.

“A club having registered a player must make this player available to the association of the country for which the player is qualified, on the basis of his nationality, if he is summoned by the association in question,” we can read on the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Fifa Players. Otherwise, the player (and the Club) may be sanctioned by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee.

Called up with Mali, Laval goalkeeper (Ligue 2) Mamadou Samassa also declined the summons from his coach, Éric Chelle, to remain available to his club. This follows a verbal agreement between the goalkeeper and Stade Lavallois at the time of his signing.
