A female doctor of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was murdered after being raped. The people of Kolkata are outraged by this shameful incident. People from different classes and professions have taken to the streets to demand justice. Tollywood stars also joined this protest march. Meanwhile, a West Bengal minister has opposed women’s drinking. Veteran actress, dancer Mamata Shankar took up the matter in the Indian media. Let’s read Mamta’s thoughts –

I feel very disturbed by what is happening around. All such words are flying around, sometimes getting laughs. Getting angry again. I heard that the minister of the state has opposed the drinking of girls. He also gave a warning that no alcohol should be served to women at night. He claims that the girls are drinking on the streets while going to the night occupation program. He has also banned the serving of alcohol to girls at night in his assembly area. But this is my question whether girls can be stopped from drinking alcohol.

Because when we impose sanctions, the tendency to hide that act increases. All the girls who go to the shop and buy liquor today, will they stop drinking if the ban is imposed! Rather, if something like that happens, they will drink secretly. If you can’t buy it yourself, get someone else to buy it for you. It’s a bit like ‘bajra antuni foska gero’.

But that’s not all, I have one more question in my mind. Is it possible to make great improvements in women’s safety just by stopping drinking? I don’t think so. But these days I see and think that all these fatwas were once issued in Islamic countries. Is it possible to stop drinking there? So how is it possible in a country like ours?

That is, instead of judging what girls should or shouldn’t do, I think, in any civilized country, regardless of men and women, people should think about what to do. Girls should not drink, just as I don’t agree, freedom does not mean drinking. And that doesn’t just apply to girls. Besides, it is not proper to drink in public streets. Street drinking is therefore very ugly and unfair to me.

Just as the definition of decency is the same for both men and women, so is freedom. At least I think so. It is none of our business to monitor what a woman is doing on a personal level. But everyone should remember that my freedom should not become a cause of annoyance to others.
