Can the valley of the Hudson River match the water in the Rhine?

AAll the world loves the Rhine Valley, at least since the first recording of the Nibelungenlied. Year after year, millions travel the legendary river landscape between Basel and Rotterdam, celebrating the endless series of castles and mountains, churches and chapels, Riesling vines and ruins, castles and mountains, churches and chapels. . ., sorry, we already had. It’s no wonder that this successful concept has long since been replicated elsewhere – because the Hudson Valley also boasts impressive Rhine landscapes. But can the valley of the Hudson River in the US state of New York really hold up to the river water of the original Rhenish valley?

As soon as I see the mighty Hudson Valley, I have my doubts as to whether the Rhine even has a chance. On a crisp, cool spring day, I stand on the Poughkeepsie Walkway, a historic railroad bridge that is now the world’s longest pedestrian bridge at 1.3 miles. The river valley stretches endlessly, the wooded heights of the Catskill Mountains greet you from the west. Only a few walkers are on the bridge, they mostly come from the small town of Poughkeepsie, which immediately inspires me with its cute name. Sublime silence, only in the distance the hoarse wail of American train horns. Two hundred feet below me, the Hudson sloshes back and forth oddly. What a mega monster river! In contrast, our good old Father Rhine seems like a trickle at best. And am I supposed to compare this whole impressive river theater with the German stream of consciousness? Isn’t the Rhine much too small for that?
