“Even if life is absurd, humans make choices with their own direction. “I want to look at fate from the perspective of that ‘choice.’”

Opera director Lee Hoesoo will direct Verdi’s opera ‘The Power of Fate’ produced by the Daejeon Arts Center. This work, which will be performed from October 16th to 19th, depicts the tragedy of three men and women caught up in an irresistible fate. Lee Hoe-soo majored in stage design and directing at the National Academy of Arts in Rome, Italy, and at the 2013 Korea Opera Awards, he became the youngest person to win the grand prize for a work and the grand prize for directing for ‘Son Yang-won’ in the creative category.

“I am not a fatalist. “I believe that there is a power that we are not aware of, but I think that humans would be too weak if we lived only believing in our predetermined fate.”

In the opera, Don Alvaro, the lover of the heroine Leonora, fires a bullet from a pistol he drops on the floor, killing Leonora’s father. Leonora’s older brother, Don Carlo, searches for Don Alvaro for revenge, but Don Alvaro, unaware of his identity, accidentally saves Don Carlo from danger… .

“It reminded me of Sisyphus in mythology. He incurs God’s wrath and keeps rolling the rock up, but it falls down over and over again. “I thought that humans are beings who can choose their own direction amidst absurdity.”

At first, I didn’t like the actions of the characters in the play. “Why did Alvaro just avoid it, saying, ‘This is fate?’ Why does Carlo go looking for his enemy and end up killing his own brother? Why was Leonora unable to forget Álvaro and enter a convent? “It seemed pathetic in some ways.” He said he would express the characters’ emotions in detail so that their actions felt as reasonable as possible to the audience.

He said the play is roughly divided into three parts. The Sisyphean part, the religious part (church) where humans need to interpret God’s will, and the war part. “It may seem solid, but it can also break down, but I think faith is what humans bring to make it precious and shining. The church I described is not complete and is in disrepair. However, when the revolving stage is turned, the image inside becomes shiny and colorful.”

Verdi’s ‘Power of Fate’ performed by Daejeon Arts Center includes soprano Cho Seon-hyung and Jeong So-young as the female protagonist Leonora, tenor Kuk Yun-jong and Park Seong-gyu as her lover Don Alvaro, and baritone Gil Kyung-ho and Kim Gwang-hyun as Don Carlo, his enemy and Leonora’s older brother. This appears. Hong Seok-won, artistic director of the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, will conduct, and the Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra will provide accompaniment.
