Canadians are listening too more music than ever before, reaching a historic milestone of over 3 billion audio streams in a single week in december 2025. This surge in consumption reflects a dramatic shift in how Canadians access adn enjoy music, driven by the widespread adoption of audio streaming services.
The Rise of Streaming in Canada
The growth in music streaming has been exponential. According to data from Luminate, the leading provider of music industry insights, Canada recorded approximately 1 million on-demand streams per week in June 2014.By March 2018, that number had climbed to 1 billion, and in November 2021, it reached 2 billion. The recent leap to 3 billion streams demonstrates the continued and accelerating embrace of digital music consumption.
“Three billion audio streams in a single week is a major accomplishment for Canada’s music marketplace,” stated a representative from Music Canada. “It demonstrates the importance of audio streaming in the everyday lives of Canadians.”
A Diversified Listening Landscape
The data reveals a significant trend beyond simply how much music Canadians are consuming, but also what music they are choosing. Analysis of the streaming figures for the week in wich the 3 billion stream milestone was reached showed that the top 10 most-streamed artists accounted for only 4.53% of all streams – a mere 136 million streams.

“Canadians are choosing to listen to an unbelievable array of artists from Canada and all around the world – not just the biggest names we all know and love,” a senior official noted. “But with more music at our fingertips, it’s never been more competitive for artists to reach their fans around the globe.”
The Impact of Licensed Streaming
The growth of licensed streaming services – including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music – has been instrumental in this transformation. These platforms have not only provided convenient access to a vast catalog of music but have also helped to revitalize the Canadian music industry after a period of decline due to widespread piracy.
“Licensed streaming services have transformed the canadian music ecosystem, helping the industry rebound,” the Music Canada representative explained. “Today, Canadians can subscribe to services that provide access to virtually the entire history of recorded music, while ensuring the creators of that music are compensated for their work.”
The increasing competitiveness within the streaming landscape underscores the need for Canadian artists to have dedicated support from streaming platform teams based within the country. As one analyst pointed out, “To help them succeed, our artists mu
