Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the imposition of sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov. Ottawa advocated disconnecting Russia from SWIFT.
“These people bear a huge responsibility for the death and destruction in Ukraine. In addition, I reaffirmed Canada’s support for disconnecting Russia from SWIFT,” Trudeau said. His speech was broadcast by the CPAC TV channel.
Canada is also imposing additional sanctions against Belarus, they will affect 57 individuals.
Russia has been conducting a military operation in Ukraine since February 24. A number of countries, including Canada, have responded by imposing sanctions. Ottawa imposed restrictions against the Central Bank, Sberbank, VTB, Russian Railways, Gazprom, Transneft and other companies. In addition, the Canadian authorities blacklisted the head of Sberbank German Gref, businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of VEB.RF Igor Shuvalov, businessmen Arkady and Roman Rotenberg.
