Ottawa: Just before the general elections in Canada, the government led by PM Justin Trudeau has once again reduced the number of study permits for foreign students. Along with this, it has also decided to reduce the work permit for foreigners and make the eligibility for it stricter. Trudeau’s announcement has come at a time when his government is trying to reduce the number of foreigners from the country. Justin Trudeau hopes that his move will reduce the housing crisis in the country and he will benefit from it in the elections. Justin Trudeau is also not getting the support of Khalistan lover Jagmeet Singh this time. At the same time, this move of the Canadian government will directly affect a large number of Indians who intend to go there to study and work. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote in a post on X, ‘We are giving 35 percent fewer international student permits this year. Next year this number will be reduced by 10 percent more. After the announcement of the changes made on Wednesday, the number of international study permits to be issued in 2025 will be reduced to 4,37,000. Whereas a year ago in 2013, 5,09,390 permits were approved. Talking about this year, 175,920 study permits were approved in the first seven months of 2024. The changes in the rules will also limit work permit eligibility for partners of students and temporary foreign workers.

How much will the change affect Indians

According to the data released by the Government of India last month, about 4.27 lakh students of the country are studying in Canada. In 2023, Indian students accounted for 50 percent of Canada’s international post-secondary student body. It is worth noting that the number of Indian community in Canada has increased steadily in recent years. The number of Indians officially registered in Canada was 6,70,000 in 2000, which increased to more than one million in 2020. By the year 2020, a total of 1,021,356 Indians were registered in Canada.

Indians constitute the largest share of foreigners in Canada. In such a situation, it is obvious that the new step of the Canadian government will affect the decision of Indians to choose Canada for studies and jobs. With the changed rules, students will not only find it difficult to go to Canada for studies but it will also not be easy to find a job. In such a situation, in the coming times, Indian students may be seen choosing America, Britain, Australia and European countries instead of Canada.

Why is the government being strict

The biggest increase in immigration to Canada in recent years has been due to temporary residents, especially workers and students. These numbers have doubled in just two years. Uncontrolled immigration is also putting a strain on the country’s housing, social services and increased cost of living. Surveys have shown that a large section of the public thinks that Canada is bringing in too many immigrants, which is preventing local people from finding work. In view of this, the government is tightening the rules.
