What is the new rule?
Under the Canadian government’s new rule, international students can only work 24 hours a week. While this is four weeks longer than the previous 20-hour limit, the government had waived the 20-hour work limit during the pandemic. In a release in April, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said, “In developing this change, we looked at students’ needs, the policies of other countries, as well as research that shows the more a student works while studying, the lower their academic outcomes.” It said the new changes strike an appropriate balance.
Canada is actually working on a policy to stop any kind of immigration, not just students. Immigration Minister Mark Miller’s statement explains it well. Miller said, ‘Canada’s rules need to be streamlined. Otherwise we will find that our programs are attracting applicants whose purpose is to work here and not to study.’
Indians are most affected
Many young people who have gone to study from India are dependent on off-campus jobs to pay their rent and meet other expenses. The restriction on working hours was lifted due to the Corona epidemic. It was abolished in April this year. India Today’s report states that most of the standard shifts are. Therefore, Indian youth will be able to work only three shifts per week.
