Speaking at a conference recently held at the Canadian Parliament on “the impact of women from the African diaspora on the economies of Canada and Africa,” the diplomat cited several examples of inspiring African women’s success stories, but regretted the obstacles that still stand in the way of many women from Africa, such as the non-recognition of degrees acquired outside Canada or certain discriminatory practices based on gender, religion or race.
Ms. Otmani also recalled the multiple opportunities for socio-professional training available to African women in Canadian society, according to a press release from the Moroccan embassy.
She thus welcomed the North American country’s policy in favor of women’s emancipation, citing the support allocated to programs for the empowerment and socio-economic integration of women and girls in several African countries, including Morocco.
This conference was held as part of the second edition of the Impact Diaspora Summit, initiated from November 17 to 19 by the Canadian organization AfricaDevelopment Network, and which saw active participation from the Embassy of the Kingdom.
HM the King’s Ambassador to Canada hosted a reception on Saturday to mark the celebration of Independence Day, which was attended by several Canadian personalities, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Ottawa, as well as prominent members of the African diaspora.
The Impact Diaspora Summit saw the contribution of the diplomatic representation of the Kingdom, in particular to an exhibition of the services and potential of the many companies run by members of the African diaspora residing in Canada, as well as the setting up of a stand with the colors and life-size photos of Morocco which made it possible to interact with African and Canadian visitors interested in tourism and investment opportunities offered by Morocco, the press release added.
The Diaspora Impact Summit is intended to be a platform for exchanges between Afro-descendant communities, Canadian political decision-makers and leaders of African institutions, with the aim, it is indicated, of supporting Afro-descendant entrepreneurs in Canada by offering them the opportunity to meet experts, coaches and present their projects.
