The Canadian government will pay C$447.9 million ($323 million) to five Indian tribes as compensation for the expropriation of their lands in the 19th century.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this is stated in a message published on the government website.
These funds will be divided among the tribes living in the province of Ontario. Representatives of these indigenous peoples received an official apology on behalf of the Government of Canada.
In 2022, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a decision to pay compensation for the expropriation of Indigenous lands. Previously, one of the tribes living in the province of Alberta received compensation in the amount of 1.3 billion Canadian dollars (then $1.03 billion).
The Trudeau government consistently advocates reconciliation between the descendants of European colonialists and the indigenous population of Canada. In 2017, the prime minister made an official apology to the indigenous people of the country who suffered while studying in the so-called resident schools, where Indian children were forcibly taken. The authorities also agreed to pay 800 million Canadian dollars (then $638 million) to the victims.
