The progressive New Democratic Party (NDP), which helped run the government in Canada by forming an alliance with the ‘minority ruling party’ Liberal Party, has declared the end of the alliance, which has shaken the position of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (pictured). Analysis is emerging that Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberal Party, whose approval ratings have fallen due to economic difficulties and opposition to immigration policies, may lose power for the first time in nine years due to calls for an ‘early general election’.
NDP Leader Jugmeet Singh announced on his social media on the 4th that he would withdraw his support for the ruling Liberal Party and end his policy alliance. Singh criticized the Liberal Party, saying, “They are too weak, too selfish, and too tied to corporate interests to fight for the people.”
The Liberals won the early election in 2021, but fell short of the 170-seat majority with 158 seats, and formed a policy coalition with the NDP the following March. The Liberals would accept the NDP’s key policy demands, while the NDP would help pass the government’s budget and join in blocking any “no-confidence vote” by other opposition parties. The coalition, which was scheduled to end in June next year, collapsed, leaving the Liberals with an unstable minority government.
Prime Minister Trudeau, who took office in November 2015, was in the spotlight as a ‘young leader’ at the age of 43 at the time, and led the change of government after 10 years. However, he was criticized for failing to properly respond to economic difficulties such as extreme inflation and rising housing prices. According to Statistics Canada, food prices in Canada increased by 25.6% and housing prices increased by 26.4% (as of July) compared to 2019. In particular, public discontent grew amid criticism that progressive immigration policies worsened the economic crisis. Last year, the Canadian population increased by 1 million compared to the previous year, 96% of whom were temporary or permanent immigrants.
The Trudeau government, which has failed to secure a majority in the House of Commons, will find it difficult to prevent a vote of no confidence in the cabinet. If a vote of no confidence is passed, the parliament will be dissolved and a general election will be held early. The main opposition Conservative Party of Canada has been calling for an early general election, saying it will oust the ruling party that has caused inflation. According to local polling agency Abacus Data, the Liberal Party’s approval rating was 25% last month, 17 percentage points lower than the Conservative Party’s 42%. After Singh’s announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau said, “As in the past few years, I hope the NDP will focus on what they can do for Canadians rather than politics.”
