Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has once again reiterated his claims about India’s alleged involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Trudeau stated that Canada had shared “credible allegations” with India several weeks ago. However, India has vehemently rejected these accusations, dismissing them as “absurd” and “motivated”. The Indian government has maintained that Canada has not provided any information regarding Nijjar’s killing.
During a recent statement, Trudeau said, “Canada has shared the credible allegations that I talked about on Monday with India. We did that many weeks ago. We are there to work constructively with India. We hope that they engage with us so that we can get to the bottom of this very serious matter.”
The diplomatic row between India and Canada continues as both sides stand firm on their positions. India has repeatedly called out Canada for making baseless accusations without providing any substantial evidence. On the other hand, Trudeau’s government insists on the credibility of the allegations and seeks cooperation from India to resolve the matter.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a native of Bhar Singh Pura in Jalandhar, had migrated to Canada in 1997. He worked as a plumber and was a married father of two sons. In 2020, India declared Nijjar a terrorist due to his links with Khalistan militancy. He was believed to be the “mastermind” of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and a member of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), both of which are banned separatist outfits. Nijjar was tragically killed on June 18 after being shot outside a Gurudwara in Surrey, Canada.
As the diplomatic dispute unfolds, it remains to be seen how India and Canada will resolve their differences and find common ground. Both countries have a shared interest in maintaining strong bilateral relations, but the current allegations have strained their diplomatic ties.
