Canal+, historic broadcaster of Ligue 1, will not participate for the first time in the call for tenders for TV rights to the French championship over the period 2024-2029, he told AFP on Monday, confirming information from The Team. Live television broadcast rights were priced at 800 million euros per season by the Professional Football League (LFP) on September 12. Candidates have until October 16 to position themselves.
This is a hard blow for the LFP, which is aiming for one billion euros per season, by adding the rights to its championship abroad. The president of the League Vincent Labrune had sensed it coming by estimating in June in The Team that Canal might not participate in the call for tenders. “It’s not a surprise” for the sports television rights consultant, Pierre Maës, interviewed by AFP.
