Canceling disengagement: the US is attacking Israel – “this is a provocation”

by time news

The US State Department strongly attacked the Israeli government this evening (Tuesday) after the repeal of the “Disengagement Law”, which was approved last night by the Knesset plenum, by a majority of 31 Knesset members against 18 opponents.

The official statement said that “the legislation to cancel the disengagement in the northern West Bank is a provocation and is a violation of commitments that the Israeli government gave to the US earlier this week. We call on the Israeli government not to allow the settlers to return to the northern West Bank.”

According to the bill, the name of the law will be changed to the “Compensation Law for Victims of Disengagement”, and that sections of the law, which relate to the cancellation of rights in the evacuated territory and the prohibition of entry and stay in this territory – will be repealed. In this way, there will be no obstacle to continue the development of the yeshivah in Chomash and the settlements there. The law has already been submitted seven times in a row, in seven different Knessets, at the urging of the head of the Samaria Council, Yossi Dagan. In the current Knesset, the initiators of the bill were Minister Orit Strock and the chairman of the Jewish Committee, MK Yuli Edelstein, who saw to its promotion.

In the explanatory notes to the bill it is written that “the law for the implementation of the disengagement plan is intended to legalize the displacement and deportation of approximately 10,000 people from their homes, their livelihoods and the structure of their lives within the framework of the disengagement plan. Not one of the purposes of the disengagement plan has been realized, and due to the fact that instead of benefit it has resulted in enormous damages, an insight is sharpened The injustice done to the citizens whose evictions and displacement were authorized by the law. Therefore, it is proposed in the bill to repeal parts of the law implementing the disengagement plan, thereby erasing to some extent the national and moral stain that is the stain on the garment of the State of Israel.”

Minister of Settlements and National Missions Orit Struck responded to the law change as well, saying: “This is a great day for the State of Israel! Today we get to realize the idea of ”Five First” – the idea of returning to the beloved land that was abandoned and to the settlements that were uprooted and destroyed. ‘If you believe that you can spoil, believe that can fix’ – this was the principle that led us to the idea of ”five first”, which we get to realize today.”
