Why are there more and more cases of cancer?

Different sources assure that the factors that have increased cancer cases have to do with aging or the extension of life expectancy, exposure to substances such as tobacco and alcohol, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

At least this is the case of the generation that was born before the 90s, however, a study published by the specialized magazine BMJ Oncology found that the incidence of cancer in those under 50 years of age is experiencing a considerable increase.

In fact, the study showed that, during 2019, cancer cases in people under 50 years of age reached 1.82 million, which represents an increase of around 79% compared to the figure collected in 1990.

What are the most common cancers in young people?

He National Cancer Institute in the United States mentions that the most common types of cancer among young people have been identified, classifying them as:

Children and adolescents from 0 to 19: Leukemia, lymphomas, tumors of the brain, kidney, malignant bone tumors, and tumors in the nervous system. Adolescents from 15 to 19 years: Brain tumors, leukemia, thyroid cancer, ovarian tumors or testicle, malignant bone tumors.

However, the study published by BMJ Oncology found that the increase in increasingly common types of cancer in young people also includes: breast, trachea, lung, intestine and stomach.

It is speculated that part of the reason behind this increase is due to diets high in red, processed meats, with high sodium content and the low intake of fruits and vegetables in the diet of the young population.
