Lee Jin-sook, nominee for the chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, said, “I feel a heavy sense of responsibility for being nominated as a candidate for chairperson amidst the unprecedented situation in which two former chairpersons of the Korea Communications Commission have stepped down in succession at a time when there are many difficult issues surrounding broadcasting and communications.”

The candidate said this at a personnel hearing held by the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee at the National Assembly on the 24th.

He continued, “I have devoted myself to the broadcasting industry for over 30 years, starting as a broadcast journalist and working my way up to head a broadcasting company,” and emphasized, “I risked my life to report on the war as it was to the people, and I also fulfilled my duty so that my fellow and junior reporters could fulfill their calling as journalists.”

The candidate stated, “Having worked as a broadcaster for a long time, I have personally experienced the changes and developments in the broadcasting and media industry, and I believe I have accumulated more experience than anyone else in all areas of broadcasting, including broadcast reporting, production, and management.”

He also evaluated the reality of public broadcasting. The candidate said, “Public broadcasting is not evaluated as an objective report based on facts, but rather is at the center of controversy over bias and is criticized for not fulfilling its social responsibility.”

In addition, he said, “With the spread of new media such as OTT, a fierce competition for survival that transcends national borders is intensifying,” and “There are growing concerns that the domestic media industry is losing its growth momentum as it cedes the initiative to global businesses, and that the public nature of media in general is weakening.”

Lastly, he said, “If given the opportunity to perform my duties as chairman, I will use the various experiences and knowledge I have accumulated as a broadcaster to quickly stabilize the organization of the Korea Communications Commission and resolve pressing issues one by one.”
