The recent legalization of cannabis or marijuana in some parts of the world and the rise in the use of its medicinal form raise the question of whether this situation will have unexpected negative consequences for health. A recent study has focused on seeing if there are really negative consequences in the case of pregnancy.

In countries like the United States, the percentage of people using medical marijuana has more than doubled. But despite its growing use as a medicine, the full effects of cannabis on human health are still unknown, especially in specific populations, such as pregnant women.

Now, a team led by Dr. Torri Metz, and also including Dr. Robert Silver, both from the University of Utah in the US city of Salt Lake City, has completed a large study of more than 9,000 pregnant women.

And the results indicate that cannabis exposure during pregnancy is associated with several health problems for the baby, especially low birth weight, and that greater exposure is associated with greater risks.

“Cannabis use is not safe,” emphasizes Dr. Silver. “It increases the risk of complications in pregnancy. If possible, it is advisable to avoid using cannabis during pregnancy.”

The study is titled “Cannabis Exposure and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Related to Placental Function.” And it has been published in the academic journal JAMA. (Source: NCYT from Amazings)
