Canned pineapple isn’t as healthy as the fresh alternative. This is due to the manufacturing process and the additives.

Canned pineapple is not really healthy

Pineapple is a popular type of fruit because of its sweetness. If you don’t want to buy a fresh pineapple and peel it, you can use canned fruit. But that’s not really healthy.

  • In order to extend the shelf life of canned pineapples, they are heated during the manufacturing process. At temperatures of over 100 degrees, however, not only bacteria and germs die, but also the vitamins in the pineapple.
  • This means that canned pineapple only contains about 6 mg vitamin C per 100 g, while a fresh pineapple scores with 19 mg vitamin C. Since numerous vitamins are water-soluble, they also pass into the surrounding water in the can.
  • And the added sugar is also problematic: 100 g of canned pineapple contains 20 g of sugar – 7 g of which is pure industrial sugar. So it is better if you reach for fresh pineapple, which of course also contains fructose but no added sweetness.

How healthy fresh pineapple is

So if you have a choice between canned fruit and fresh, the latter is a better choice. The pineapple is rich in vitamins and minerals.

  • In addition to vitamin C, pineapple also contains bromelain. This ensures that digestion is stimulated and the body is better supplied with blood. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Magnesium is also helpful against muscle cramps, fatigue and headaches. The pineapple has a lot of that too.
  • The minerals in pineapple regulate the acid-base balance in the body.
  • Pineapple is also suitable for losing weight, as it contains only 0.1 fat and comes with 56 calories per 100 grams.
