The Cannes Film Festival has chosen “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig as jury president – and has chosen one of the most important representatives of independent American cinema.

Cannes.

The US director of the hit film “Barbie”, Greta Gerwig, will be president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival next year. She is only the second American to take on the role, following actress Olivia de Havilland in the 1960s, the festival said. The 40-year-old broke all records with “Barbie” this year. The choice was obvious, festival president Iris Knobloch was quoted as saying. Gerwig embodies the renewal of cinema.

As a film fan, she sees Cannes as the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can represent. The festival quoted the American director, actress and screenwriter as saying that she was overwhelmed, thrilled and felt honored.

With the feminist satire “Barbie” she became the first female director of a film that exceeded the billion-dollar box office total. The comedy about the incarnated Mattel doll was nominated in nine categories a few days ago for the Golden Globes on January 7th. The Californian made her breakthrough as a director in 2017 with “Lady Bird”. With “Little Women” she celebrated another success with several Oscar nominations (and an award for costume design). As an actress, she appeared in “Greenberg” and “Frances Ha,” among others.

Gerwig became known as “the muse of independent American cinema,” the press release continued. The 40-year-old succeeds Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who chaired the jury last May. The festival on the Côte d’Azur will take place for the 77th time next year – from May 14th to 25th. (dpa)
