CannonKeys Announces ‘Penguin Flat Foot’ Low-Profile Keycap Profile

A new option for custom keyboard enthusiasts arrives with the upcoming release of the PFF keycap profile from CannonKeys, offering a low-profile design focused on ergonomics and compatibility. The PFF profile—short for Penguin Flat Foot—is the latest creation from designer Matt3o, manufactured by Keyreative, and builds upon the foundation of his previously released PBS (Penguin Belly Slide) profile.

The custom keyboard market continues to expand, with users seeking greater personalization and performance from their setups. This latest offering from CannonKeys caters directly to that demand.

A Low-Profile Evolution

According to a company release, the PFF profile is essentially a reimagining of the PBS profile, specifically tailored for use with low-profile switches. While PBS prioritized ergonomics, Matt3o redesigned the keycaps to accommodate the reduced height constraints inherent in low-profile keyboard builds.

The design blends familiar aesthetics with a unique touch. The keycaps feature cylindrical front and back edges, reminiscent of Cherry keycaps, combined with a spherical scoop on top—similar to SA or Keychron’s KSA profile. This combination is expected to create a more pronounced separation between keys compared to traditional cylindrical designs.

Universal Compatibility and Layout Flexibility

Like its predecessor, PFF boasts universal height, a feature that provides significant flexibility for users who prefer alternative keyboard layouts. This compatibility extends to popular layouts such as Dvorak, Workman, and Colemak, allowing for a seamless transition without requiring specialized keycap sets.

Matt3o showcased the PFF profile with the Aperture Priority design, previously featured on both the PBS profile and the Bullet Train keyboard. Currently, CannonKeys is offering PFF sets in WoB (white on black) and Verdant Retro colorways. Both sets are constructed with a durable 1.5 mm wall thickness and utilize dye-sublimated printing for long-lasting legends.

Switch Compatibility and Pricing

The available PFF kits utilize MX-style stems, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of switches, including Gateron Low-Profile and Kailh Low Profile Choc V1 switches.

While official pricing has not yet been announced, the creator notes that PFF sets will be more affordable than PBS sets, which currently retail between $40 and $80 depending on the specific set and size. This anticipated price point positions the PFF profile as an accessible option for enthusiasts looking to upgrade their low-profile keyboard experience.
