18 hours after the securing of ““Mayo” Zambada and one of the Children of “El Chapo” Guzman, the Government of Mexico He still doesn’t know if it was a capture or handed over to the authorities of EU.

This was stated by Rosa Icela Rodríguez, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) in the morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador:

“You ask if it was a rendition, if it was a capture, that is part of the investigation that we would be expecting from the United States Government, we have had good information, as you saw starting yesterday, with the United States Embassy in Mexico.”

Asked whether it was a negotiation between the alleged criminals and the US government, Rodríguez Velázquez also said that he had no information on the matter:

“That is part of the investigation that we have to continue, and we are also waiting for the official statement on how it happened yesterday, if it was a capture, if it was a surrender, what happened? Is that part of what the US government will have to talk about?”

Even though it was pointed out to him that several hours had passed since the arrest, it is still unknown what happened, to which he responded:

“The information and investigation is being carried out in the US. I just gave them the information we have in Mexico. We still don’t have the answers to the statements (…) Of course! There is other information being discussed in the Security Cabinet that is not public. We will wait for confirmation.”

And although she said that the US and Mexican prosecutors, Merrick Garland and Alejandro Gertz Manero, respectively, spoke cordially after the arrest, when asked if the Mexican official would report on the matter, she said that “we will have to ask him.”

After all this, the Secretary of Security explained that Mexico did not participate in the events, “the Government did not participate in this arrest or delivery, this is not the case.”

In her “public report” on the arrests of “El Mayo” and Joaquín Guzmán López, Rosa Icela Rodríguez indicated that the US Embassy contacted her office at 3:30 p.m. yesterday to inform her that:

“Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López were in the custody of authorities in El Paso, Texas; in a second call, at 3:45 p.m., the Embassy confirmed the information and reiterated that the identity of the two people had been confirmed.”

The SSPC then requested a photograph to inform its superiors, to which the embassy commented that it had already seen the images of the two people in a video taken in the “offices of the US Government.”
