Car crash into the sea in Póvoa do Varzim leaves two dead

A man aged around 60 and a teenager aged 16 died this Saturday after the car they were traveling in fell into the sea near the north marina of Póvoa do Varzim.

According to the Sub-Regional Command of the Porto Metropolitan Area, the alert for the accident was given at 2:56 am. The Navy clarified that the alert was given by a member of the public who saw a vehicle falling into the sea with two people inside, and emergency services and elements from the Lifeguard Station and the local Command of the Maritime Police of Póvoa de Varzim were activated. .

At the scene, authorities discovered that the two people were inside the vehicle. The victims, a man aged around 60 and a teenager aged 16, were removed by divers from the Póvoa de Varzim Volunteer Fire Department.

The deaths were declared on site by the health delegate, and the bodies were subsequently transported to the Porto Legal Medicine Institute.

To the Lusa agency, the Navy added that the Maritime Police psychology office has been activated and is providing support to the young man’s family. So far, authorities do not know the identity of the 60-year-old man.

There were also 10 operatives from the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Póvoa de Varzim on site, supported by four vehicles
