They produced 658,282 units between January and March, 19.6% more. Nine out of 10 were exported.

The relief from the bottlenecks that had been suffered in the previous months and the recovery of local demand and of the main European markets are boosting the solvency of Spanish vehicle factories. In March, they assembled 237,318 vehicles, 30.8% more than in the same month of 2022, while the accumulated figure for the first three months stands at 658,282 units.

The latter represents a progression of 19.6% in year-on-year terms, which allows for part of the pocketed demand to be released. “Although there are still intermittent supply problems in the plants, which will continue to set the pace of the recovery”, pointed out Jos Lpez-tafall, general director of Anfac. Some imbalances that lead to occasional slowdowns in the assembly lines, as is happening in Vigo, or that make in others such as Ford in Valencia they maintain an ERTE.In addition, the global data continues to be 13% below those of 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

Exportac

Regarding the distribution of production by type of vehicle, passenger cars (512,304 units) grew by 15.6%, less than half of what vans, trucks and buses did (145,978 units, 34.6%). Of the total number of vehicles assembled between January and March, the 13.1% corresponded to 100% electric or plug-in hybrid models. Those of pure gasoline and diesel, without any type of hybridization, continue to be a large majority: more than 80% of the total

The recovery in demand in the EU -which increased by 17.9%, to 2.7 million- was the other reason for the good results in the Spanish plants, which exported 90% of their production in the first quarter. Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Turkey remain the top five destinations of those cars. Here, too, there are dark clouds on the horizon, in this case “due to problems in logistics and transportation.”

Supervit comercial

This power in foreign sales has also been revealed in the trade balance of the Spanish automotive industry. With data in this case from January and February, it registered a surplus of 1,157 million euros, which represents an advance of 5%. The contribution of the factories was decisive, since the import of automobiles generated a surplus of 2,095 million, while the balance of the balance of the companies supplying parts was 938.6 million.
