It is soon the end of a ritual of almost forty years. The one that sees motorists replace the outdated green sticker every year with the new one received by mail a few weeks earlier. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced on Monday July 17 that the French will no longer have to affix their “green insurance sticker” on the windshield of their vehicle from April 1, 2024. A compulsory formality since 1986, under penalty of a fine now set at 35 euros.

The end of the green card had been requested for several years by insurers, who had intensified their discussions with the ministries of the Interior and the Economy on this subject. Beyond the simplification for companies and motorists, the measure will make it possible to avoid printing and sending by post some 60 million insurance certificates. Enough to save tons of CO2 and a few euros per contract.

But beware: the disappearance of the green sticker does not mean that of the payment of insurance, which remains compulsory.

An almost infallible file of insured vehicles

The abolition of the green card on April 1, 2024, the effects of which will be seen above all on April 1, 2025, will also and above all make it possible to fight against non-insurance. “A simple visual check cannot determine whether it is a fake or not”, explained to us Franck Le Vallois, general manager of France Assureurs. From now on, law enforcement will exclusively check whether a vehicle is insured or not by querying the File of insured vehicles (FVA). Created in 2016 and managed by insurance companies, it lists all insured vehicles in France, no later than seventy-two hours after taking out the contract: i.e., to date, 59.42 million vehicles.

Police and gendarmes, who have had access to it since 2019, will thus be able to know instantly if such and such a vehicle is not insured and more easily unmask the 800,000 uninsured drivers who drive in France. “This file is 99.3% reliable,” boasts France Assureurs. And in the event of a problem, the motorist can always present his dematerialized insurance certificate to settle a potential dispute.
