Next year could prove to be very expensive for automakers, especially in a context where sales of electric vehicles have been stagnant since the beginning of the year.
From January 1, the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Consumption) regulation requires an additional reduction of CO2 emissions by 15% to 81 g CO2/km. This means that the fleet of all new cars will have to be at the level of the specified average.
Many of the companies are far from it because sales of electric cars in their portfolio, which have zero average CO2 emissions, have stagnated. What will happen if they don’t meet the goals? High penalties follow. If the limit is exceeded, each gram in excess is charged 95 euros for each car registered during the year. Possible fines will be in the hundreds of millions of euros.
According to UBS analysts, the potential amount of fines to be paid by automakers could reach 7.5 billion euros a year, taking into account recent sales trends.
