Car Recalls: Ford Explorer SUVs at Risk of Rollaway Issue

Ford has recently announced a recall of over 230,000 of its mid-size SUVs due to a safety issue that could potentially cause the vehicle to roll away. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the recall specifically affects certain 2020-2022 Ford Explorer vehicles.

The safety regulator explained that the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt on these SUVs may fracture, leading to the disconnection of the driveshaft. This can result in a loss of drive power or, in the absence of the parking brake being applied, a vehicle rollaway. Both scenarios pose a heightened risk of a crash.

This recall comes following an inquiry by NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, which was prompted by two complaints about repairs that did not work for two previous recalls – one in the current year and another in the previous year.

If you own a Ford Explorer SUV manufactured between 2020 and 2022, it is crucial to determine whether your vehicle is affected. Approximately 238,364 Ford Explorers fall under this recall. To check for any open recalls on your vehicle, you can refer to USA TODAY’s recall database.

To resolve the issue, Ford dealers will replace the rear axle bolt and a bushing at no cost. They will also inspect the rear axle cover for any damage. Owners will receive notification letters about the recall starting from November 6. Alternatively, they can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, with the recall number 23S55.

For those who want to verify if their car is subject to any recalls, there are multiple resources available. USA TODAY has an automotive recall database, and the NHTSA website allows owners to search for recalls using their vehicle identification number (VIN). Additionally, NHTSA’s hotline at 1-888-327-4236 and their official website, www.nhtsa.gov, can provide more information.

It is essential for car owners to stay updated on recalls and take prompt action to ensure their safety on the road. In a time where vehicle safety is under scrutiny, staying informed and proactive is crucial.
