Highlights:
- For the first time in India, sales of SUVs outnumbered hatchbacks.
- Tata Nexon in the compact SUV, Maruti Wagon R in the hatchback segment and Hyundai Greta in the mid SUV.
Sales of hatchback cars fell 14 percent. A total of 55,850 SUVs were sold. Sales of the same SUVs last year stood at 45,518 cars in December 2020.
Compact SUV segment
1. Tata Nexon
Tata is at the forefront of this segment, which has emerged as India’s No. 1 car segment. Its Nexon car topped the list with 12,899 cars sold in December 2021, an increase of 89% over last December 2020.
2. Hyundai Venue
Second-placed Hyundai sold its Venue car 10,360 units, down 16 percent from December 2020. But still in second place.
3.Maruti Suzuki Prize
Third-place Prius sold 9,521 cars in December 2021. This is 22 percent less than its previous year’s sales.
Compact hatchback segment

1.Maruti Suzuki Wagon R.
In the first place is Maruti, India’s No. 1 company. The car sold a total of 19,728 units in December 2021. This is 12 percent more than in December 2020.
2.Maruti Suzuki Swift
Maruti’s Swift is in second place. This car has sold a total of 15,661 cars. But that is 14 percent less than the previous year.
3. Hyundai Grand i10
In third place is Hyundai’s i10. The car has sold a total of 6,151 cars. The same car sold 10,263 cars in December 2020.
Mid SUV segment
It is the third best segment in India with a total sales of 32,818 cars. This is higher than in December 2020. Sales of 28,330 cars by 2020 in this segment are significant.
As a result, the segment grew by 16 percent. This segment includes Hyundai Creta, Kia Celtos and Mahindra XUV 700.
