On 26 September at 10:30 am at the State Archives of Naples, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days, numerous and important historical documents owned by the State will be returned by the Commander of the Nucleo for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) of Naples, Major Giampaolo Brasili, to the director of the State Archives of Naples, Candida Carrino, in the presence of the Archival Superintendent for Campania.

These are eighty-two historical documents datable between 1798 and 1893, attributable to the Neapolitan Bourbon period and belonging to the Fund called “Cards of the Queen Maria Carolina – Bourbon Archive” kept in the State Archives of Naples. Among these stand out in importance: a letter dated 25 August 1810 from Maria Carolina D’Asburgo, Queen of Naples, to her husband Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and a letter dated October 1823 from Maria Carolina di Borbone, Duchess of Berry, to her father Francesco, at the time Duke of Calabria, then King of the Two Sicilies (1825-1830):

The important recovery originated from the notification of the officials of the State Archives of Naples of the sale of one of the two documents indicated above and from the monitoring of e-commerce platforms for the sale of historical documents. The investigative activity, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor of Salerno, made it possible to seize a total of 115 historical documents from 18 thefts / shortages, to the detriment of State Archives and libraries throughout Italy, and 1 historical document linked to the Napoleonic period, attributable to the year 1798, missing from the State Archives of Paris.

Today’s delivery confirms the importance of the collaboration between the Carabinieri and the public and private bodies, which allowed the identification of important historical testimonies despite the fact that some documents had never been included in the “Database of illegally stolen cultural assets ”, The largest database of stolen works of art in the world managed by the Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
