Richard Carapaz (EF) returned to compete after a month and a half and did so with victory. The Ecuadorian won the 3rd edition of the Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes (1.1), 169.2 kilometers between Puget-Théniers and Valberg.
The escape of the day was made up of 8 riders from procontinental teams who managed to have a maximum advantage of 6 minutes over a peloton led by the French squads. The cut remained in harmony until the ascent to Col de la Couillole (15.9km à 7.3%) began, where the weakest elements dropped and a combative Jordi López (Kern Pharma) left alone; There were 52 kilometers left to finish and his adventure companions were neutralized one by one.

Finally, Mark Padun continued Camargo’s work so that Richard Carapaz made his final attack in the last 7,000 meters. A little further back Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën Team) followed by a group made up of Cristián Rodríguez (Team Arkéa Samsic), Lenny Martinez Groupama – FDJ and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) tried to control the movement of the Ecuadorian without success, as the Olympic champion gradually increased his advantage to raise his arms at the finish line.
In this way, after his abandonment in Itzulia, Carapaz returned to racing and obtained his first victory in Europe this season. Gall and Van Eetvelt completed the podium for the day.
