During the pandemic, vacations with caravans or motorhomes found new fans. The industry expects demand to remain high.

Düsseldorf.

According to a study, vacations with mobile homes or caravans generated sales of more than 18.1 billion for the domestic economy last year. This is around 20 percent more than in 2021 and a record value, the industry association CIVD reported on Friday at the opening of the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf. The association had commissioned the study from the German Economic Institute for Tourism (DWIF) at the University of Munich.

Around 5.9 billion euros stayed directly in the holiday areas and benefited the regional economy, it said. Campsites recorded more than 52 million tourist overnight stays (+11.5 percent). The number of RV overnight stays outside of campsites rose by 10.9 percent to 17.6 million. 6.6 billion euros have been invested in vehicles and other camping equipment. The travel costs would have hit the books with 5.6 billion euros.

Interest in motorhomes is unbroken

Not only the campsite and parking space operators benefit from the expenditure of the camping holidaymakers, but also shops, companies and service providers in the target areas, explained the DWIF board member Bernhard Harrer. For example, holidaymakers bought rolls from the bakery around the corner, visited sights or went out to eat.

More than 750 exhibitors will show their innovations at the 62nd edition of what is, according to the trade fair company, the world’s largest trade fair for mobile homes and mobile homes. Around 235,000 people visited the fair in 2022. The last day of the fair is September 3rd. The CIVD is the conceptual sponsor of the Caravan Salon.

For example, a particularly light caravan that can also be towed by electric cars will be presented. He can also get his electricity from the towing vehicle. Another manufacturer shows a caravan with a built-in office corner under the heading “Live.Work.Connect”. The vehicle is not yet on the market.

The industry sees itself on the upswing. “Despite all the crises, interest in motorhomes and caravans is still great, and the potential of our industry is far from exhausted,” explained Association Managing Director Daniel Onggowinarso before the start of the trade fair. (dpa)
