It is common knowledge that not all food is healthy. In particular, various studies occasionally identify specific foods that may be dangerous. Research suggests two drinks in particular should be avoided: soft drinks and fruit juices. These play within the framework carcinogenic foods a big role.

Carcinogenic foods: This poses a risk

Some components of our diet can increase the risk of cancer if consumed regularly because they contain carcinogenic substances or stress the body. It is important, however, that food alone cannot cause cancer. Rather, a whole range of factors play a role in the development of the disease.

Factors affecting health:

  • Nutrition
  • Movement
  • Environment
  • genetic predisposition
  • lifestyle

Be careful with soft drinks and juices

The problematic substitutes include, for example, highly processed foods. If consumed in excess, they can cause various health risks, such as memory deficits. But the World Health Organization (WHO), among others, has been warning about carcinogenic foods for years.

Study has now identified additional representatives of these species. In a long-term analysis by UK Biobank, 20,000 participants were examined and the impact of their diet on their cancer risk. The corresponding results published fellow in eClinicalMedicine – Part of the Lancet Discovery Science.

For better categorization, individual food groups were also examined in detail. As nutritionist doctor from the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Martin Smollich, tells Focus Online, mentionedthe results are “very informative”.

It is said:

“It’s clear here: The negative effect of highly processed foods (assuming causation!) is basically an effect. Soft drinks and juices. Other products (eg plant-based meat alternatives) have no role here at all.”

These are the results of the investigation

The findings are in line with current findings from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) on potentially carcinogenic foods. Accordingly, sugar-sweetened beverages should be avoided to reduce the risk. They contribute to increased obesity and thus indirectly to a higher risk of cancer.

According to the results of the study, it was shown, among other things, that 15,921 of the participants had cancer during the follow-up period of 9.8 years. Highly processed foods accounted for 22.9 percent of their diet. In total, there were 4,009 cancer-related deaths.

The risk was higher for those who ate more of the foods. It increased with the amount spent. A ten percent increase in consumption was associated with a six percent increased risk of mortality.
