A 2-month-old baby has undergone a rare heart surgery at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore.

In this regard, the hospital administration has said: A 2-month-old baby weighing around 4 kg was admitted to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in Coimbatore due to respiratory problems. Examination revealed a tumor in the child’s right atrium and fluid around the heart. This made the blood flow difficult.

After this, cardiologist Nipun Devprasad removed the fluid around the heart using modern technology. As there was very little space for blood flow, the child had to undergo an immediate open heart surgery to remove the tumor and save the child. A precision procedure was then performed to remove the tumor.

A postoperative echocardiogram confirmed complete removal of the tumor. The child is currently recovering.

A biopsy of the tumor revealed it to be a very rare capillary hemangioma.

Affecting just 0.2 percent of the population, this tumor is extremely rare in infants.

This extremely dangerous and rare operation has been successfully performed by a team comprising pediatric cardiologist Nipun Vijay Sathasivam and anesthesiologist Nipun Narendra Menon. The hospital informed that the operation has been sponsored by Chennai Aiswaya Trust and Coimbatore Society Rotary Association.
