Cardinals for the first time for four countries

With the addition of 20 new cardinals, the total number of cardinals in the diocese is 226, with 132 under the age of eighty.

Four of the twenty new cardinals who will be elevated to the rank of cardinal on the evening of August 27, are from Mongolia, Singapore, East Timor and Paraguay, four countries, and for the first time cardinals have been announced for these four countries.

16 of the 20 new cardinals are eligible to elect a new pope. Among these new cardinals, 7 of these 20 are monks.

With these twenty new cardinals, the total number of cardinals in the Catholic Church is 226, and the number of those under the age of eighty eligible to elect a new pope is 132.

At present the Salesians are the majority of monastics in the House of Cardinals. There are ten cardinals in the congregation.

Of the total number of cardinals currently in the Church, 112 were announced by Pope Francis. Also, among the current cardinals under the age of 80, 11 were announced by Pope John Paul II, 38 by former Pope Benedict XVI, and 83 by Pope Francis.

As of Tuesday, August 27, 54 out of 108 cardinals in Europe, 38 out of 60 cardinals in the Americas, 20 out of 30 cardinals in Asia, 17 out of 27 cardinals in Africa, and 3 out of 5 cardinals in Oceania are eligible to elect a new congregation.
