The Cardinals Grech and Hollerich have outlined the next steps in the process of a united journey for bishops around the world in anticipation of the final meeting of the Synod of Bishops in 2024. The work of the World Synod of Bishops on the Joint Journey continues as the delegations are called to reflect on the synthesis report published in October 2023 and prepare contributions for next year’s Synod of Bishops.

Bishops around the world have received a document containing instructions from the World Bishops’ Conference with a letter from Cardinals Grech and Hollerich. The letter underscores the importance of the experience gained by participants in the first session of the World Bishops’ Conference and emphasizes the wealth of experience that cannot be summarized in a speech.

The process of unity will continue, with specific themes emerging for consideration at the level of the ecumenical church and in collaboration with the ecclesiastical departments of the Roman General Secretariat. These themes include an initial study of the Latin Liturgy and the Eastern Churches, mutual relations between bishops and monks in the Church, and the inclusion of women in the priesthood.

Teams of experts from all continents will be asked to work on the path of a united journey on these topics indicated by the Pope, and a report on the progress of this work will be presented to the Council.

The Cardinals have highlighted the importance of Pope Francis’ approval that the Synod of Bishops is about a united journey, not a theme, emphasizing the ongoing process of unity for bishops around the world. The list of topics will be submitted to the Pope for the benefit of the World Bishops’ Conference, signaling a continued commitment to fostering unity and collaboration among bishops worldwide.
