“I was always a director, not a voracious reader like my writer friends, who consumed an astonishing amount of literature, but the same amount of literature we consumed was what was going to be narrated,” said the filmmaker who worked with Vicente Leñero, Carlos Monsivais y Jose Emilio Pachecoamong other authors.
“I always thought that the scriptwriters, especially after those stormy times when I started making films, I said, I’m going to work with writers because in any case I can give them a technical path for them to dedicate themselves solely to beauty and I had the good eye and luck to be able to count on great talents,” he said. But he has not only made a reputation for his great scripts, he also tends to repeat actors in his films, as is the case of Patricia Reyes Espíndola, despite a kind of Black Legend that exists.
“I often tell actors that they want to work with me, but the black legend, which is a kind of dispensary of monstrosity that flies around, has made many not want to work with me because they are told that they are going to go to Basilica of Guadalupe with thorns stuck in their backs and what I have done is that there are a lot of us who can’t do it, but a few who can, so I invite them,” Ripstein joked.
For him, the roles are thought out from the writing of the script. “I have this lady who has her characteristics and who walks here and speaks in this way, she is going to be Patricia Espíndola or Silvia Pasquel, The actors and actresses who have worked for me are almost all designed for specific actors,” he said.
He referred to what table work is like in his productions, where he sits down to talk with the actors and show their ideas.
“It’s about listening, transforming and aligning. It’s that simple. Of course, I’m not an acting teacher, but I’ve had the chance to teach a few people some great things. Of course there are those who do not accept advice because maybe They don’t seem reasonable to you, and when that happens, it’s best to say thank you and move on.
“It’s very tasty and they are very surprised that I offer them these things, but they are very versatile; comedians have a contact with the public that makes them very vibrant, very free, very loose and you can use that same looseness for your benefit, giving another tone to things,” concluded the director of The Castle of Purity.
