That Alcaraz would put on a show was understood after a few minutes, when he won a fantastic point with a shot under the legs and an excellent backhand volley to defend the net. And despite serving out in game six (2-4) and forgiving four break balls in the next, putting Tsitsipas ahead 5-2 in the first set, Alcaraz always seemed to be in command of operations. Tsitsipas suffered a lot to win the points from him, while Alcaraz hit powerfully with both his forehand and backhand, defending the court in an unbeatable way and forcing the rival to force his shots. The Greek needed ten minutes to keep his serve and escape 5-2 and little by little Alcaraz’s warnings became an avalanche. The Spaniard recovered the break at 15 at 4-5 and kept his serve to love with a marvelous backhand lob that touched the line. It was the beginning of a streak of seven consecutive games in which Alcaraz gave up just five of 32 points to his rival. The public applauded each point of the Spaniard, who alternated touches of enormous power and others of pure class, volleys and drops that left one of the strongest defensive players on the circuit standing.

Alcaraz’s streak took him from 2-5 to 7-5 and 2-0, with a break in the first game of the second set that left Tsitsipas on the ropes. He converted the first break chance he got in the second set and saved three against to defend it until the final 6-3. He sealed the match with a wonderful backhand dropshot and flew into the Miami quarterfinals, where he will meet the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz and Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
