On December 11, 1890, Carlos Gardel was born. On this date, National Tango Day is celebrated.

Some say it was in Toulouse, France, others in Tacuarembó, Uruguay three years earlier. lor is it true that he arrived with his mother Bertha Gardès at a very young age to Buenos Aires and grew up in Abasto neighborhood.

At the age of 7, he sat at the door of his house singing to collect some coins to the amazement of his neighbors who admired his voice.while his mother worked as an ironer.

In his youth he made friends with matreros, malevos and compadritos of all kinds, many of which would be inspiration for the lyrics of some of his tangos: “El pardo Augusto”, “El Cordobés” and “El Morocho Aldao”, among others.

One night in 1911, He met the singer José Razzano at the house of the pianist Gigena, which would be the genesis of the Gardel-Razzano duo whose rise would occur in 1913 with performances in several Buenos Aires theaters. Then would come the successful tours of Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and even Spain and France, but not before having obtained his first Argentine identity document.

In 1930, Carlos Gardel together with José Razzano and Francisco Canaro created the “Argentine Union, Society for Broadcasting Musical and Film Works”.

Days later, Zorzal began to record the so-called “sketch films” or “musical frames” that served as promotion of his songs. Shortly after, European cinema incorporated him into its ranks. His films became an unprecedented box office success.

In 1934, Gardel decided to try his luck in the United States by partnering with Alfredo Le Pera to write the scripts and lyrics for the songs. He participated in the films “Tango on Broadway”, “Star Hunters”, “Tango Bar” and in “The day you love me”, his best film, released after his death.

In 1935 he began his tour of Colombia, arriving in Bogotá on June 14. At the airport, more than 10 thousand people had gathered to receive him. Gardel had been hired to act in the theaters of the “Cine Colombia” chain.

On Sunday, June 23, Gardel sang on the radio station “La Voz de la Victor” for thousands of listeners. In the end, Zorzal told the audience: “I don’t know if I will return, because man proposes and God disposes. But such is the charm of this land that welcomed me and bids farewell to me as if I were its own son, that I cannot say goodbye, but see you forever. After these words, he sang his last song “Tomo y obligo.”

The next day, the Ford F31 plane restarted its takeoff to Cali alongside Gardel and his musicians. As soon as it took off, the pilot lost control of the aircraft and crashed into another plane at the head of the runway, killing its occupants instantly.
