Carlos Pólit, former comptroller of Ecuador, surrendered to the United States Justice after being found guilty of conspiracy to launder assets in that country. It happened this Tuesday, April 23, 2024, after the jury’s verdict was announced in the Southern District Court of Florida, which lasted almost a day.

Carlos Pólit, former comptroller of Ecuador, surrendered to the United States Justice.

The prosecutor in the case, Alexander Kramer, requested immediate imprisonment due to flight risk. Pólit fled Ecuador, where he has a sentence.

However, his lawyer, Howard Srebnick, denied that such a risk existed. However, his passport was confiscated. Later the former comptroller voluntarily surrendered.

According to the story, three agents approached Pólit to arrest him. Meanwhile, he removed his jacket and tie.

He immediately walked with the agents until he left the room. Then he will be transferred to the Federal Detention Center in Miami, located in front of the Court.

The maximum sentence that Pólit could pay is 100 years. However, it is not usual for this deadline to be met in the United States.

According to Celi, the sentence that would be applied to the former comptroller would be between 10 and 12 years. Although it must be considered that Pólit is 73 years old and his age could be a factor that makes him eligible for a reduced sentence.

The jury’s decision was unanimous among the 12 jurors and guilt was declared on all charges against him. The Prosecutor’s Office presented six charges against Pólit, which were analyzed and debated during ten days of trial. These are:

-One count of conspiracy to launder assets (20 years in prison)

-Three counts of concealment of money laundering (60 years in prison)

-Two counts of participating in transactions derived from illegal activities (20 years in prison)
