‘Carlotta’ strengthens into a Category 1 hurricane

The tormenta tropicalCarlotta’ intensifies the Category 1 hurricane in the Saffir-Simpson scale.

This Friday, the National Metereological Service reported through a statement that Tropical Storm Carlotta has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane.

According to the agency, its center is located 730 km southeast of Cabo San Lucas, BCS. It has maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h, gusts of 155 km/h and is moving west-northeast at 22 km/h.

The phenomenon intensifies slowly as it moves across the Pacific Ocean, off the national coasts and in a trajectory parallel to the territory.

Damage in Mexico from “Carlotta”

Given these characteristics, cloud detachments from Carlotta will increase the probability of rain and showers (5 to 25 mm) in Baja California Sur. In addition, its wide circulation will cause wind gusts of 40 to 60 km/h and waves of 1 to 2 meters in said entity during the morning.

In light of this, the authorities asked citizens to “extend precautions to the general population in the areas of the aforementioned states due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) and to heed the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System in each entity.”

It is worth mentioning that the cyclone could reach Category 2 hurricane this Saturday, August 3, when it is located 875 km southeast of Cabo San Lázaro, Baja California.
