KINSHASA – In a statement by the caucus of national deputies from North Kivu, this September 1, 2023 at the Palais du people, these elected officials spoke out on the massacre perpetrated in Goma on August 30, 2023.
These parliamentarians, led by Mwanza Hamissi Singoma, first offered their condolences to the bereaved families. They strongly condemned the disproportionate use of force by elements of the defense forces which resulted in the death of dozens of people and several injured.
The national deputies from North Kivu are demanding that the government of the republic take precautionary measures towards those responsible for defense and security in the provinces. Finally, they demand the urgent establishment of a fact-finding mission to quickly shed light on all these unfortunate events. According to them, we also need a parliamentary inquiry.
The massacre in Goma occurred while a demonstration was being prepared by a messianic movement (Wazalendo). The Congolese army’s response cost dozens of human lives and injured dozens. In addition many people were arbitrarily arrested.
