Lifetime ban on cruises – because of gummy bears

A US vacationer wanted to go on a cruise with a bag of fruit gums containing cannabiol. She was promptly kicked off the ship and will never be allowed to travel with Carnival Cruise Line again. An exaggerated reaction? Anyone who knows the shipping company should actually know better.

There are good and bad gummies for crusaders. A US vacationer who wanted to go on a Caribbean cruise recently discovered this. While boarding the “Carnival Horizon” in Miami, security guards discovered a suspicious bag of gummy bears in her bag with a green hemp symbol on it. They classified the candy as a drug, even though Melinda Van Veldhuizen, 42, had bought it over the counter in Texas to help her sleep on board.

It is a cannabiol-containing candy that is not considered intoxicating unless you eat the whole bag at once. That’s why it’s legally available in many US states, but is still illegal under federal law – and therefore banned by all US cruise lines.

Little bear, big impact: The passenger was promptly expelled from the ship and at the same time punished with a lifetime ban from all Carnival ships. Now, on the one hand, one could complain about the completely exaggerated reaction of the shipping company and the disproportionate sanctions because of a few bears. It would have been easier to confiscate the bag, throw it in the nearest bin and let the woman go on board.

On the other hand, anyone who travels with Carnival Cruise Line, the shipping company with the strictest zero-tolerance policy, should actually know better. Since 2023, sniffer dogs have been used during embarkation and signs on the gangway warn against taking illegal drugs. Every guest receives a lengthy set of rules in good time, which also states that foods containing cannabiol are prohibited on board.

The ship’s rules also apply to guests on cruises

A cruise is fun as long as all passengers follow common rules. This is actually quite simple. When people are traveling on a ship, safety and consideration come first. This has always been called ship’s rules in seafaring, and it also applies to particularly relaxed cruise guests. But more and more often there is the impression that some vacationers confuse a cruise ship with a private libertinage where they can take whatever they want with them.

It’s amazing what guests want to bring on board that has no place there: immersion heaters, irons, game consoles, candles (all too dangerous because of the risk of fire), but also knives, toy guns, baseball bats or, for whatever reason, handcuffs and so on especially alcohol. Although everyone knows that all luggage will be screened and searched if there is initial suspicion.

More about cruises:

After all, a fishing rod is theoretically still allowed on Carnival Cruise Line. How long remains questionable. Recently two passengers were caught fishing for fish from the balcony in the port of Nassau in the Bahamas. The two of them are never allowed to set foot on the shipping company’s ship again.

Carnival Cruise Line is now embarrassed by the thing with the intoxicating bears. You offered the holidaymaker a refund of the travel price.
