BOLZANO. The provincial government, which met on Friday 12 July for a working meeting, analyzed potential solutions to make housing more affordable for South Tyrolean citizens.
A greater housing reserve for residentsthe modification of the municipal property tax (short and long-term rental), a partial reorientation and greater simplification of subsidized housing contributions, the guarantee that land is made available for social housing where necessary, the recovery and use of vacant propertiesthe implementing regulation on apartments at controlled prices, housing for workers in production areas and housing solutions for vulnerable people taking into account social and inclusive aspects were, in short, the main topics on the agenda.
“The issue of affordable housing for South Tyroleans is one of the priorities of the Government’s program for the current legislature. It is a problem that is not easy to solve”, declares the President of the Province Arno Kompatscher. “In the province of Bolzano we have very high housing costs because there is little building land available and a great demand. The pressure on the real estate market also comes from the high demand from abroad and other regions of Italy. South Tyrol is a particularly sought-after place to live. Interested people make offers on the market and consequently prices rise.”
The will of the council seems to be to guarantee new spaces, reserved for citizens of South Tyrol, especially for families who intend to build or buy a house: “We need to reserve more apartments and building land for the resident population”, adds Kompatscher. “And this objective can be achieved with a transversal approach: tax lever, urban planning law and subsidized housing construction. Measures that need to be integrated with rules that reserve available housing and building land for the resident population. Today’s work is for this purpose: to prepare concrete regulatory interventions that can facilitate the situation, improving it especially for young families”.
The individual possible measures were outlined during today’s meeting. But “the work is not yet finished on some points”, concludes President Kompatscher. Some topics will be discussed in more depth in the coming days, in order to gather opinions and proposals from the interest groups. The Provincial Government will provide detailed information on the results later.
