Soil Products Institution (TÜK) started purchasing carob yesterday in İskele, Kumyalı and Dipkarpaz.

Carob producers had previously come to the agenda by reacting to the fact that the purchase price of carob was not disclosed, and then these discussions were replaced by the fact that carob purchases never started.

The expected news came and TÜK announced that the first purchases have started. However, this time, the loss of productivity in carobs of producers who did not have appropriate storage conditions came to the fore.

Speaking to CYPRUS, Carob Producers Association President Bekir Bolatcan stated that a producer who could not store carob under suitable conditions because he did not have a warehouse lost 2 tons of product and that he was worried that the product loss might increase. Bolatcan said, “This is the issue we have been focusing on for months. “Carob is a durable product, yes, but storage conditions are very important and not every producer has this opportunity,” he emphasized and requested that the carob purchases made by TÜK continue over the weekend.

“There is a loss of 2 tons of product in one producer”

Bekir Bolatcan, President of the Carob Producers Association, stated that the carob purchases that they have been waiting for for months have started; He announced that Soil Products Institution (TÜK) started purchasing carob in İskele, Kumyalı and Dipkarpaz, and a private trader started purchasing carob in Famagusta and Güzelyurt.

Bolatcan stated that TÜK will purchase carob in Nicosia, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt and Lefke regions as of Monday and said that there were negativities they detected with the start of the purchases.

Noting that a producer who does not have a warehouse under suitable conditions to store the carob has developed mold in its carob, Bolatcan said, “One producer loses 2 tons of product due to mold. This is the issue we have been focusing on for months. “Carob is a durable product, yes, but storage conditions are very important and not every producer has this opportunity,” he said.

Bolatcan pointed out that he is concerned that product losses may increase and stated that they hope to get through this period with little damage.

“TURKSTAT should also make purchases on the weekend”

Emphasizing that carob will be purchased from all producers in the country, Bolatcan underlined that the important thing is to purchase carob quickly.

Bolatcan: “Will TURKSTAT make purchases at the weekend? Or will it only make purchases during working hours? “We still haven’t learned this,” he said, pointing out that this situation would affect the duration of carob purchases.

Bolatcan stated that the purchase of carob was carried out in a process and that there was an accumulation in this period, and that they had a request from TÜK to continue the purchase of carob on weekends.

Bolatcan noted that the amount of carob to be purchased throughout the country is over 2 thousand tons and emphasized, “It is not possible to talk about the exact number because there are products that mold due to lack of correct storage conditions, and we also have producers who feed carob to their animals because they have lost hope.”
