Carving a pumpkin: How to make the perfect Halloween pumpkin | Life & Knowledge

by time news

Soon it will be “trick or treating” again!

Halloween is celebrated worldwide on October 31st. You can’t imagine the Halloween festival without a carved pumpkin. According to the myth, the creepy pumpkin heads should have chased away evil spirits in the past. Nowadays they can be used as a great Halloween decoration.

We’ll show you how easy it is to carve a pumpkin and what to look out for!

Which pumpkin is suitable for carving?

Almost every type of pumpkin is suitable for carving funny or creepy grimaces. The most popular varieties are Jack O’Lantern, Ghost Rider (Halloween pumpkin), Hokkaido, butternut, and nutmeg. You can find these in almost every supermarket, on pumpkin fields or at weekly markets.

Larger pumpkins are usually easier to carve and hollow out, but otherwise the size does not play a significant role. When choosing, you should also pay attention to the shell. It should be firm to guarantee sufficient stability.

Another tip: Check whether your Halloween pumpkin is in a good position – this will make it easier to carve it later.

This is what you need to carve a pumpkin

  • A pumpkin
  • A sharp, pointed knife or a saw knife
  • A spoon or ice cream scoop
  • A pen to mark
  • Candles or tea lights
  • Bowl for the pumpkin meat
  • Petroleum jelly or hairspray

Carving a pumpkin – step by step

Step 1. Wash the pumpkin so that there is no dirt or debris left.

Step 2. Cut off the lid. You should hold the knife at a slight angle so that the lid does not fall into the pumpkin later.

Step 3. Hollow out the pumpkin with a spoon or ice cream scoop. All fibers and cores should be removed from inside. You can use the pulp later for a pumpkin soup, pumpkin puree or pumpkin chutney.

Step 4. Now comes the exciting part: carving the face. It is best to first draw the outline of the face on the pumpkin with a marker. When you’re happy with the design, you can cut out areas to remove.

Step 5. So that the pumpkin lasts and does not go moldy, the pumpkin has to dry after carving. Then you can coat it inside and out with petroleum jelly or spray it with hairspray. That extends the shelf life!

Step 6. Now the pumpkin just has to shine. For this you need the tealight or a candle. Attention: So that your pumpkin is dedicated to every gust of wind and does not catch fire, put the candle or the tealight in a glass and only then in the pumpkin!
