Casablanca-Settat: Import of 7,048 heads of livestock intended for slaughter (press release)

Casablanca – The Casablanca-Settat regional agriculture directorate announced on Saturday the importation of a total of 7,048 heads of livestock intended for slaughter, including 6,448 heads of cattle and 600 heads of sheep by 10 importers, from Spain and Latin America.

In a press release, the management specified that during the month of March 2023, a total of 5,129 heads were imported, including 4,529 heads of cattle and 600 heads of sheep, compared to 1,919 heads of cattle imported during the month of February 2023.

According to the Casablanca-Settat regional directorate of agriculture, the importation of calves took place in good conditions while respecting the standards and health conditions imposed by the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA), stressing that this operation allows the continuity of the supply of local markets with red beef.

In this wake, the press release explains that in order to encourage the importation of domestic cattle of meat production breeds in order to ensure a normal supply of red meat to the national market and to cope with the increase in the price of this meat on the market, the government decided by decree No. 2.23.47 of January 27, 2023 to suspend until December 31, 2023, the import duties applied to domestic cattle of meat production breeds intended for slaughter.

This government measure aims to remove the difficulties encountered by Moroccan importers and ensure the supply of the national market with cattle intended for slaughter and to ensure a normal supply of beef at the local markets, the same source added.

It is also a question of reducing and stabilizing the price of red meat on the national market, of confronting all forms of speculation and intermediaries in the marketing of red meat and of preserving the cattle herd, concludes the press release.
