The number of cases where ambulances took more than an hour to transport emergency patients to the hospital has increased by 22% compared to last year. It has been claimed that the so-called ’emergency room roundabout’ after the residents’ strike has been confirmed with specific figures.
According to data submitted by the National Fire Agency to Rep. Chae Hyeon-il of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Safety Committee, on the 14th, from March, when the residents’ strike began, to August, there were a total of 13,940 cases where the transport time between the scene of an emergency patient and the hospital exceeded 60 minutes.
This is a 22% increase from the 11,426 cases in the same period last year. This phenomenon was observed in major cities such as Daejeon (164 cases → 467 cases, 3.3 times), Daegu (74 cases → 181 cases, 2.6 times), and Seoul (636 cases → 1,166 cases, 2.3 times).
In some cities, the distances patients are transported by ambulance have also increased, with the number of patients being transported more than 30 km between the scene and the hospital increasing significantly.
Daejeon had 449 people, 2.6 times more than last year (170 people), Seoul had 362 people, 2.2 times more than last year (161 people), and Daegu had 788 people, 1.8 times more than a year ago (451 people).
Rep. Chae said, “The problem of emergency room roundabouts has been confirmed numerically through the ambulance scene, the distance between hospitals, and the status of transfers,” and added, “I urge the government to quickly resolve the serious disaster situation in which patients are missing the golden time and the public’s anxiety is increasing due to the recent serious medical crisis.”
