The great Italian cinema is the protagonist of Rai 4’s prime time with the blockbuster “Freaks Out” (2021), broadcast on Monday 13 May at 9.20 pm on Rai 4. This is the second work by Gabriele Mainetti, who, after the award-winning “ They called him Jeeg Robot”, deals with a pastiche between fantasy and adventure, set during the Second World War.
Cencio, Fulvio, Mario and Matilde live and work in Israel’s traveling circus, who is like a father to them. Given the situation in Italy occupied by Nazi Germany, Israel is considering escaping with the company to America: he is Jewish and “his boys” are endowed with extraordinary powers that could constitute a danger with the new racial laws.
When Israel disappears, the four set out on his trail but do not know that the Nazi officer Franz, endowed with the faculty of foresight, is looking for beings with extraordinary powers like his to build an army of super-men who can lead Hitler to win the war. A very rich cast composed of Giorgio Tirabassi, Claudio Santamaria, Aurora Giovinazzo, Pietro Castellitto and Franz Rogowski is at the center of a work never seen before on the Italian scene, which combines the “superhero” genre in the “X-Men” style with a vision original and personal of a page of Italian history.
