Catalan hotels received 2.56 million tourists in July and set a new historical record

Up to 2,564,892 tourists stayed in hotels in Catalonia during July, 4.85% more than a year ago. It is a new historical record in a month of July since the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has had records, that is to say, since 1999, according to data from the Hotel Tourism Industry published this Wednesday. Overnight stays, however, were still 0.45% below pre-pandemic levels. Catalonia registered more than 8.12 million overnight stays last July, while in 2019 there were more than 8.16 million. It also highlights that the demarcation of Barcelona was the one that recorded the most overnight stays in the State. During the seventh month of the year, prices were 7.57% higher than in July 2022.

Of the total number of tourists who stayed in Catalan hotels, 946,973 were residents of the State, while more than 1.61 million were foreigners. The majority of travelers stayed in establishments in the demarcation of Barcelona (1,344,729 tourists), followed by Girona (591,281), Tarragona (528,765) and Lleida (100,116). In Barcelona and Girona the majority of travelers were foreigners, while in Tarragona and Lleida the majority were tourists resident in the State.

For tourist areas, the Costa Brava received 552,063 passengers; the Gold Coast 488,264; the coast of Barcelona 466,275; the Terres de l’Ebre 40,501; the Terres de Lleida 30,852 and the Vall d’Aran 26,358.

In relation to overnight stays, Catalonia was ranked as the State’s second favorite destination, both among foreign tourists and residents of Spain. Specifically, Catalan hotels concentrated 15.2% of the overnight stays of residents in the State, and 20.9% of foreigners. The average stay was 3.17 days, while in 2019 it was 3.35 days. The figures do not include data for tourist flats, campsites or rural houses.

As for prices, they climbed 7.57% year-on-year, above the state average, which was 6.17%. The average daily rate for Catalan hotels was 130.98 euros, again slightly higher than in Spain, where it was 128.8 euros.

In the State as a whole, the number of tourists exceeded 12.6 million tourists, 4.45% more than in 2019. Of the total, 6,031,375 were residents (47.62%) and 6,633,252 foreigners (52.38%). Likewise, 43.15 million overnight stays were recorded, of which 64.36% were by foreigners.
